Search messages in a group or chat

You can search inside one group, across a whole circle, or inside a personal chat. Tap a result to open the chat at that message.

1. Open the chat and tap the search icon

   Inside a group the box says Search this group. In a personal chat it says Search this chat.

2. Type a word

   Use a word you remember from the message, such as “plumber” or “tanker”.

3. Narrow it by date if you need to

   Tap the date filter and choose Any date, Today, Last 7 days, Last 30 days, This month or Custom range.

4. Tap a result

   The chat opens at that message.

Search the whole circle

From a group's search, tap Search all of and the circle's name to widen it to every group you're in, plus people and group names. You can also start there with Search this circle. Circle search needs 2 letters or more. See Search a circle.

Search your list of chats

To find a conversation rather than a message, use Search chats at the top of the Chats tab in the app. See The Chats tab.

Search the automatic rooms

The Buy & sell and Polls & events rooms have their own search, such as Search buy & sell. See The Buy & sell and Polls & events rooms.

If you can't find it

• Try another word, or fewer words.
• Widen the date range. You'll see “Nothing in these dates. Try a wider range.” if the dates are too narrow.
• Search only covers groups you're in, and only the messages you can see. Messages from before you joined may be hidden.
• If a message is too far back to open from search, you'll be asked to scroll up in the chat to find it.
