The bell and “What's new”

How What's new sorts notifications into groups, shows 3 rows then See all, combines rows into “Ravi and 3 others”, and lets admins approve requests.

Updated

The bell keeps your Zinola notifications in one list, whether or not your phone buzzed. In the app it opens What's new. On the website it opens a short list, with a link to the full Notifications page.

  1. Tap the bell

In the app it sits in the top bar, between search and your photo. On the website it's in the header.
  2. Pick a chip

All, Unread, or one of the group chips such as Circles or Replies.
  3. Open a row

Tapping a notification takes you to the post, chat, listing or request it's about.
  4. Clear the rest

Tap Mark all read in the app, or Mark all as read on the website.

The groups

Every notification belongs to one group. The groups match the switches in Choose which notifications you get, so what you see here is what you can turn off there.

App chipWebsite headingWhat lands there
NeighborhoodYour neighborhoodNew posts, polls and events near you, and the evening update
CirclesYour circlesPolls, events, group buys and questions posted in your circles' groups

MarketplaceMarketplaceMessages about listings, offers and new listings near you

Ordinary chat messages and direct messages don't appear here. They're counted on the Chats and Circles tabs instead. An @-mention or a reply to you in a chat still shows under Replies.

Grouped rows

Some notifications collect on one row instead of adding a new row each time. This happens for reactions and shout-outs on your post, RSVPs to your event, news on a post you follow, a marketplace conversation, and a help desk issue. When a second person joins in, the row says “Ravi and 1 other”, then “Ravi and 3 others”. Each time, the row moves back to the top and becomes unread again.

Join requests in the list

If you run a circle, join requests appear under Requests. In the app, tap ✓ to approve or ✕ to decline. On the website's Notifications page, click Approve or Decline. In the app you get 5 seconds to tap Undo before it's sent, and Approve all appears when more than one person is waiting. Someone approved here doesn't see older messages. To choose what they see, use Join requests instead.

How long notifications stay

Notifications are kept for 90 days. A notification about something that gets deleted or taken down disappears too. If nothing arrives at all, see Notifications aren't arriving.

Common questions

Why don't my chat messages show in Zinola's notifications?
Ordinary messages are counted on the Chats and Circles tabs, not listed in What's new. Polls, events, group buys and @-mentions from chats do show.
What does “and 3 others” mean on a notification?
Several people did the same thing to the same post or request, so Zinola shows one row instead of many. It names the latest person and counts the rest.
Does turning off push notifications empty the bell?
No. Push settings only decide what makes your phone buzz. The bell still collects every notification.
How do I mark all Zinola notifications as read?
Tap Mark all read at the top of What's new in the app, or Mark all as read in the bell dropdown on the website.

Still need help?

Send a request and a person on the Zinola team will reply, usually within a working day.
